GAO / SOFTWARE ENGINEER

I build software
with intention.

I’m Gao, a software engineer with 14 years of experience. I care about clear interfaces, resilient systems, and the quiet details that make digital products feel considered.

PROFILE / 01

A practice shaped by curiosity.

I like working across boundaries—between product and engineering, structure and expression, systems and the people who use them.

01

Clarity

Reduce noise, reveal structure, and make the next action feel obvious.

02

Craft

Treat visual rhythm, interaction, language, and code as one experience.

03

Systems

Design foundations that stay understandable as products evolve.

04

Curiosity

Keep testing assumptions, learning new tools, and changing perspective.

SELECTED DIRECTIONS / 02

A growing archive of things I make.

This space brings together product work, interface studies, and independent experiments. The archive is being assembled with care.

INTERFACE SYSTEMS

Tools for complex work

Exploring how dense technical workflows can become legible, calm, and precise.

ARCHIVE IN PROGRESS

CROSS-PLATFORM PRODUCTS

One idea, many surfaces

Thinking about continuity across web, mobile, and the systems behind them.

ARCHIVE IN PROGRESS

INDEPENDENT EXPERIMENTS

Small ideas, built end to end

A place for prototypes, visual studies, useful utilities, and unfinished questions.

WAYS OF THINKING / 03

Principles I return to.

01

Start with the shape of the problem

Good software begins with a precise understanding of what deserves to exist.

02

Make complexity visible

A clear model is more valuable than a clever layer hiding a confused one.

03

Build for change

The best systems leave room for new information without losing their character.

04

Keep the human in the loop

Technology matters most when it gives people more agency and less friction.

ABOUT / 04

Builder by nature.

For the past 14 years, I’ve moved between product thinking, interface design, frontend, backend, and deployment. That range has taught me to see software as a connected whole rather than a collection of isolated parts.

I’m drawn to work that rewards patience: understanding a system, finding its essential shape, and refining it until both the logic and the experience feel inevitable.

A quiet hello is always welcome.

If something here resonates, email is the simplest way to say hello.
